Runners take off during the annual Iwo Jima Memorial 7k Fun Run⁄Walk held May 7.
MCCS Henderson Hall held the annual Iwo Jima Memorial 7k Fun Run⁄Walk, May 7. Over 200 participants ran or walked in the event, which stepped off from Henderson Hall’s Smith Gym at 7 a.m. and proceeded through Fort Myer to the Iwo Jima Memorial and returned to Henderson Hall.
After the event, Headquarters Battalion Commander Col. William K. Lietzau presented awards for the top three finishers in four categories, male and female walker and runner. Door prizes, including a flat panel television, were also drawn for. The event concluded with a balloon drop in which all participants were invited to the gym floor while a net of balloons, some filled with cash, was opened to a mad ‘‘dash for cash.”
MCCS Semper Fit presented the event with the assistance of volunteers from the Marine Corps Exchange, MCCS Support, and Navy Mutual Aid Association. Fort Myer PMO and the Arlington County Police Department provided race coordination.
Cadbury-Schweppes, Sikorsky Aircraft, Gottta Run, Honest Beverages, Navy Federal Credit Union, and Navy Mutual Aid Association sponsored the event.
