Chaplain’s Chat

Receptivity

Lt. Robert Jones
Headquarters Battalion Chaplain
How receptive are you to God and what God would say to you in this moment? Are you receptive to things beyond the plenary aspects of entry level religion and basic spirituality? Are you really ready for God to do something in your life that only God can do? If you are ready, then I recommend three approaches to your level of godly receptivity. Approach level #1 is prayer. This is the primary starting place. From prayer all things emanate. We are able to communicate with the God of all creation and share our thoughts, our frustrations and the highs and the lows of life. This is where we are able to make things better in and of themselves, because God is now ‘‘in the loop.”

Approach level #2 is more prayer. More prayer means more communication with God and the furtherance of a divine relationship. It is one thing to pray when you feel like it but it is quite another thing to have an honest and open relationship with the God who can do the things in our life that need to be done. I have found within my own testimony, that when I pray, the first thing that changes is me. There is no way that I can come into contact with a Holy and Awesome God and remain the same. I must be refreshed, restored, renewed and hopefully rejuvenated to face the drama of life and the problems of life in a divinely energized way. Nothing is worse, than when the people around us are stale, dry and lifeless. We need prayer for them and for ourselves in those moments.

Approach level #3 is faith. The New Testament Bible is clear and precise on this point. That faith is the evidence of the things we cannot see. I find the unseen to be more real in some cases than the hopes and dreams and sensitive feelings attached to the fleeting nuances of luck and good fortune. We need faith in God and the faith that comes from God. In that faith moment, we become more alive spiritually and the things of religion become more significant in a biblical way, rather than baseline spirituality and frugal religious things. We need a living God to bless us real good.

In conclusion, our receptivity can be a thing that helps us and those around us to be better. When we are receptive to God, we become more sensitively helpful to those around us needing a real friendly touch. When we reach out and touch someone in a godly way, we are really being used by God to make the world around us a better place. When the world around us a little bit better, everybody knows it and we can then give God the credit.
