FitLinxx takes the guesswork out of getting in shape

These FitLinxx consoles are a window to keeping track of workouts. The unit on the left is where users enter their identification number to begin a workout. The machine recommends stretches for the day, or provides exercise choices for strength, flexibility or cardio. The unit on the right is where users can input data about free weights, or exercise done outside of the fitness center.
One of the obstacles to staying physically fit can be the lack of measurable results. Sure, you get sore after a tough weight-lifting session, but if your biceps aren’t bulging within a week, it is easy to lose interest.

The FMMC fitness centers have recently implemented a program to help their patrons measure exactly what they are accomplishing during their workouts.

To register, fill out a form at the fitness center, where staff will provide some basic information and assign a pin number. Once a confirmation e-mail is received, the user is ready to go.

To begin a workout, users go to one of the consoles located near the entrances of the fitness centers. They they choose the machine they want to use, enter their number again, and the machine keeps track of the weight and repetitions.

Free weight aficionados do not despair; there is an additional console where you can record your free weight use.

As you move from machine to machine, you enter your number at each station. When you are done, you ‘‘sign out” at the same console you began with.

‘‘FitLinxx is a great way to break down exactly how you are spending your workout time,” said Brandon Lamberson, who works at the Fort Myer fitness center.

In addition to tracking time spent, FitLinxx does not allow users to ‘‘cheat.” It makes sure each rep consists of the full range of motion to make the workout more effective. It can also figure out things such as optimal heart rate, and design a program to help you achieve it on a consistent basis.

The system allows users to ask questions to be sent directly to the fitness center staff. Once it can be solved, the user is notified.

When patrons sign up they indicate what kind of workouts they are interested in. This gives staff members ideas for new classes, and a way to notify interested parties when the classes will begin.

FitLinxx keeps track of your workouts and sends you periodic e-mails to update you on your progress. The system will tell you how much weight you have lifted, in terms of pounds and African elphants. It will tell you how many calories you’ve burned in terms of total calories and ice cream sundaes.

Since FitLinxx came to the FMMC in January, 414 people have registered. There are about 10-15 new users per week.
