Smiling wine tasters receive their complimentary glasses from an MWR employee at the outset of the third annual Wine Tasting Festival held at the Washington Navy Yard’s Catering and Conference Center, May 8.
Two hundred Sailors and civilians sampled various types of wines from around the world at the 3rd Annual Wine Tasting Festival hosted by Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), May 8 at the Washington Navy Yard’s Catering and Conference Center.

Several tables with white and red wines were located on the center’s outdoor patio. Many participants remained despite the gray skies and occasional dousing of rain. They tasted their wine samples while eating hors d’oeuvres, which the center provided – inside. The David Bach Consort, a contemporary jazz band, entertained the participants.

The wine tasting festival was a way for the MWR to encourage people who work on the Washington Navy Yard to socialize, said Lori Riccio, MWR special events coordinator and assistant liberty coordinator.

‘‘People can mingle with one another and talk about their experiences at other wine tasting festivals,” said Riccio.

One of the participants asked Riccio if MWR will hold another wine tasting festival this year. MWR has been putting on the event annually.

‘‘If it is as successful as this one is, I don’t see why we can’t try to do it again,” she said. ‘‘I’d love to have the festival in the spring and the fall. It all depends on the turnout.”
